The 18th century lamp tailor-made for Bouillotte card game.Bouillotte is a bluff game considered to be one of the ancestors of Poker. During social evenings, three to five players, equipped with cards and tokens, gathered around a so-called Bouillotte table, a pedestal table made of marble, mahogany or various precious woods, and covered with a green cloth. For lighting, the guests used gilded bronze or silver three-branched candlesticks. Arranged in the middle of the table, they were finally covered with a metal lampshade equipped with a sliding system allowing the intensity of the flame to be modulated, through a game of concealment, and to obtain a subdued atmosphere, nature to spice up the game. This ingenious device, tailor-made to liven up wild games, was thus baptized “ Lamp Bouillotte ”. The first models even had a hollow groove on their base that could accommodate the cards at the end of a draw so as to announce the result. The base, in the shape of a bowl, was intended to receive the tokens which, at the end of the game, were given to the household staff.
